This is the Patek Philippe Golden Square reference 3566/1. Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe has remained among the most desirable brands in horology since its introduction. A company that has always been privately owned, the brand has been manufacturing watches for almost two centuries without interruption. The company is currently owned by the Stern family, whose heritage dates back to when it was supplying dials to Patek in the 1920s.
Predating the iconic Nautilus, the first Ellipse was introduced in 1968 with the original reference 3548 being coined the “Golden Ellipse”. A distinctive model characterized by the elliptical case shape accompanied by either an integrated bracelet or an accompanying leather strap, the Ellipse brought about a new era for the brand in the dress watch catalogue that provided an alternative to the iconic Calatrava. Conceived by the Jean-Daniel Rubeli, the Ellipse is a classic example of form over function with its timeless aesthetic.
In the strictest terms, this particular model is often referred to as the Golden Square given its case proportions and shape. Rather than the elliptical shape that defines the Ellipse, the 3566 is a perfect square with the 28 × 28 case dimensions. Often accompanied by its integrated bracelet with the trademark bark finish, this particular 3566 features a blue dial with a hammered texture. Powered by Patek’s ultra-thin manual-winding cal. 175, the 3566 is a lesser-known yet versatile variant of the Ellipse family that incorporates all of its recognizable features.
Elegant, iconic and classy, the Ellipse remains one of the more understated and overlooked model in the brand’s extensive catalogue. A design that is as relevant fifty years ago as it is today, the Ellipse is a display of purity and truly proves how a seemingly simple time-only two hander can remain a mainstay within a horological powerhouse such as Patek Philippe.
