This is the Patek Philippe Ellipse 3862/1. Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe has always been synonymous with high horology. A company that has always been privately owned, Patek has been manufacturing watches for almost two centuries without interruption. The company is currently owned by the Stern family, whose heritage dates back to when it was supplying dials to Patek in the 1920s.

The first Ellipse was introduced by the brand in 1968, with the original reference 3548 being coined the “Golden Ellipse”. A distinctive model characterized by the elliptical case shape accompanied by either an integrated bracelet or an accompanying leather strap, the Ellipse brought about a new era for the brand in the dress watch catalogue that provided an alternative to the iconic Calatrava. Conceived by the Jean-Daniel Rubeli, the Ellipse is a classic example of form over function with its timeless aesthetic.

In the strictest terms, this particular reference belongs to the Golden Circle family of the Ellipse due to the case proportions which resembles more of a circular shape with edges rather than the oval shape that characterizes the model. This particular 3862 features an uncommon two-tone sunburst blue sigma dial with matching dauphine hands and an integrated yellow gold woven-patterned bracelet. The two-tone dial gives an additional layer of depth to the watch that is dressed in the fan-favourite livery of blue and gold.

Elegant, iconic and classy, the Ellipse remains one of the more understated and overlooked model in the brand’s extensive catalogue. This Patek Philippe Ellipse 3862/1 is in excellent vintage condition. The dial shows no sign of age and remains flawless while the case edges remain thick and sharp. There is a light engraving on the caseback which can be polished off upon request and the hallmarks are still crisp and clear. The bracelet exhibits no stretch with minimal signs of wear and will fit a wrist of up to 7.25”. It is a watch only sale with no box and papers and itis in full working order.
