This is the Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 2508. Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe has always synonymous with high horology. A company that has always been privately owned, Patek has been manufacturing watches for almost two centuries without interruption. The company is currently owned by the Stern family, whose heritage dates back to when they were supplying dials to Patek in the 1920s. Incidentally, the Calatrava was also the first model released by the Stern family as the staple time-only watch in the brand’s collection.
To understand the Calatrava, one must hark back to the roots of the model with the reference 96 originally produced in 1932. The first Calatrava was also the debut of the brand’s first in-house caliber, the Cal 920. Produced over a 40-year span, the 96 was generally regarded as the blueprint for all the Calatravas that came after. Diminutive, minimalist and dressy, these characteristics would go on to define the future references within the line as the brand’s flagship dress piece. The reference 570 was released during the same period as the 96 with a larger case size, though the smaller case size was likely more favoured during that time period.
Produced over a nine year period from 1951-1960, the reference 2508 is significant for The first time-only reference by the brand sporting a waterproof case by Francois Borgel (then known as Taubert & Fils). Taking design cues from the iconic reference 1463 including the screw-down caseback and case proportions, the 2508 was produced mostly in yellow gold with rose gold variants and a small number in steel. Fairly large for its time, the 2508 is often recognized by its dagger-and-dot style indices and the accompanying dauphine hands. Powered by the manual wind Cal 27SC launched two years prior as the brand’s first serialized central seconds movement, the reference represents several defining features among 1950s Calatravas.
While the Patek Philippe Calatrava is by no means a rare watch given the seemingly endless variations, some references are undoubtedly more important. Often overlooked at the expense of other significant references such as the 96 or the 2526, the 2508 has its own place in the culmination of the modern variants. Carrying the essence of the quintessential Calatrava with its perfectly balanced proportions, the 2508 is an understated, time-only classic.

This Patek Philippe 2508 is in very good vintage condition. The case remains in excellent shape with sharp and pronounced lugs. All hallmarks on the case are still crisp and legible. There are some light hairlines on the case consistent with age but no dings or dents on the case. The caseback remains in excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. The original dial has aged into a light cream colour with some light oxidization marks on the 7 and 8 o’clock markers and the plexiglass has very light signs of wear. The crown is original to the watch. It comes accompanied with a period correct Patek Philippe Box as well as its original strap and 18K yellow gold buckle. The watch is in full working order.
