Cartier Stepped Tank New York 15716
A reference that predates the famous “Must de Cartier” line, the 15716 is a curious gold-plated reference with an elongated and stepped case that was produced before the reunifications of the New York, Paris and London boutiques.

This is the Cartier Stepped Tank reference 15716. The history of the Cartier Tank is one that barely needs any introduction, given that it has been covered excessively. The origins of the Tank began in 1917, inspired by war machines of the same name. Given the success of the original Tank, Cartier began to vary the types of Tank to leverage on the success of the model. Among the many Cartier timepieces, the Tank is arguably their most recognizable model alongside the Santos.
Being a highly popular and identifiable model from Cartier, it’s no surprise that the Tank has been the model with the most variations. Storied and legendary, it has become an icon for the brand and one of the most noteworthy time-only watches. The aforementioned reference 15716 is a particularly enigmatic one. Produced in the 1970s for a short period of time that predates the better known “Must de Cartier” line, the 15716 was somewhat ahead of its time. With an elongated and stepped gold-plated case, the reference was considered large for its period and is likely the reason for its discontinuation in 1976.
Produced before the reunification of the New York, Paris and London boutiques, the Stepped Tank came in three variations with three different references - the 15716 (New York), the 471 (London) and the 1543 (Paris). The 15716 appears to be the reference with the smallest production number and has some distinct differences with the other two. The only reference with a caseback that is screwed down and an elongated cabochon, the case was made out of a brass alloy and finished with a 14k gold plating. Featuring a Cartier logo and a 7 digit serial number on the caseback, the 15716 remains the most elusive and is the only serialized variant among the Stepped Tanks.
With its enlarged case and gold-plated case, the Stepped Tank provides a remarkable presence on the wrist. While it may not be the most known among the many vintage references from the house of Cartier, the 15716 nevertheless provides an interesting insight into the experimentation of the pre-must Era and given its small production numbers possibly below 15,000 pieces in total, it is almost a given that there are never more than a couple for sale at any given time.

This Cartier Stepped Tank 15716 is in fair vintage condition. There are numerous signs of wear on the case with hairlines on the caseback but the engravings are still crisp and visible. There is a noticeable ding on the caseback as seen in the photos and the dial has some aging near the 7 o’clock marker. The watch comes with an original Cartier strap with a generic gold-plated buckle and no box or papers. The watch has just been serviced by Cartier and comes with a 2 year service warranty until July 2026. It is in full working order.
