This is the Jaeger-Lecoultre Reverso Platinum Number One reference 270.4.69. A manufacturer synonymous with its flagship model, the Reverso, JLC is a storied brand with a long and rich history in watchmaking. Colloquially known as “the watchmaker’s watchmaker” for its watchmaking prowess, the brand has almost two centuries of watchmaking history with its most important and recognizable creation being the first reversible watch, the Reverso.
The story of the Reverso began in 1931, where Rene-Alfred Chauvot patented the creation of what would eventually become the brand’s most iconic and associated model. Dating back pre-JLC, the Reverso was originally meant for the sport of polo, with the reversible case acting as protection for the front. Throughout the years, there have been countless variations of the iconic JLC model since its first introduction in the early 20th century. This particular reference, the Platinum Number One, was released in 2001 and preceded the elusive Number 2 – a 35-piece limited edition skeletonized tourbillon.
Exquisitely crafted, the defining feature of the Number One is the skeletonized dial and hand-wound movement. Engraved and finished by hand, the number one was released as a limited edition of 500. Housed in a platinum case with near-perfect proportions, the skeletonized nature of the watch provides another dimension to the Reverso that collectors have become accustomed to. Powered by the manual wind Cal. 849R-SQ, the hand-engraved finish of the movement displays a high level of craftsmanship that is so often associated with the brand.
As far as modern Reversos go, the Platinum Number One remains among the most distinct with its skeletonized finish and platinum case. Subtle yet complicated, the 270.6.49 is an impressive interpretation of an iconic model by an important brand. Undoubtedly modern with design cues stemming from the Art Deco period, the Platinum Number One is truly a display of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s prowess and craftsmanship.
