Vacheron Constantin Quantieme Perpetual 43031
Description
This is the Vacheron Constantin Quantieme Perpetual reference 43031. This reference was introduced in the early 1980s following Audemars Piguet’s own Quantieme Perpetual, the reference 5548. These were released in the midst of the Quartz Crisis that engulfed the Swiss watch industry and was an important reference that was part of the revival for not only complicated watches but also the industry as a whole.
As mentioned earlier, the reference 43031 came in between Audemars Piguet’s introduction of their own QP and Patek Philippe’s legendary 3940. Based on a Jaeger-LeCoultre 920 ultra-thin movement, the 43031 ran on the caliber 1120/2 QP, a perpetual calendar module from Dubois-Depraz. This was a seminal period in the history of horology as it marked the start of a regular production series of complicated wristwatches by no less than the “Holy Trinity”.
The dial, while seemingly busy, is actually rather minimalist for a watch that’s this complicated. At the 12, there is the month indicator as well as a leap year indicator (notably missing in AP’s Quantieme Perpetual). The day indicator is situated at the 9 and the date indicator at the 3. At the 6, there is a moonphase indicator above the brand’s name and signature Maltese cross.
With the neo-vintage era largely upon us, these complicated pieces from the 90s are not as undervalued as they were a year or so ago as collectors have realised the tremendous value relative to many other more expensive pieces. These also extend to complicated watches from that era from other brands such as Audemars Piguet, Blancpain and Breguet. Given the historical importance and limited quantities of this reference, it is truly one for the discerning collector to own as part of horological history.
Condition
This Vacheron Constantin 43031 is in very good pre-owned condition. There are some signs of wear on the case, notably some deeper scratches near the pushers. The crystal has no flaws and the dial is clean. The watch is in full working order.
