Description

This is the Vacheron Constantin Overseas 42040. Founded in 1755, Vacheron Constantin is the world’s oldest continually operating watch manufacturer. The purveyor of the world’s most complicated wristwatch, Vacheron has a rich history of producing quality of the highest standards. Undoubtedly one of the most resilient as well, the brand has survived both world wars and many other historical events along the way and continues to be one of the most celebrated watchmakers today.

First introduced in 1996, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas 42040 was the brand’s successor to what is widely referred to as its first sports watch, the reference 222. Alongside the smaller reference 42050, this generation of Vacheron Constantin Overseas was produced for a total of 8 years. Later references of the 42042 and 42052 marked a change in caliber from the Cal. 1310 to the 1311. Besides the movement upgrade and the use of luminous material, everything else remained the same as its predecessor and this reference is credited as the foundation of the modern Overseas that is sold by the brand today.

Shaped after the brand’s signature Maltese cross, the 42040 was designed to be industrial, rugged and versatile. Once a forgotten reference from the early 21st century, the rise in interest toward neo-vintage watches has sparked an interest towards the sports watches of the time with its smaller case size and vintage-inspired aesthetic. Given Vacheron’s standing in horology, it comes as no surprise that the first generation Overseas is among the references from the brand that has received the biggest increase in interest.

Condition

This Vacheron Constantin 42040 is in good overall condition. The bracelet has some signs of wear in the form of hairlines scratches and has some light stretch. It will comfortably fit a 7” wrist and has 7 removable links. The bezel has no dings with some obvious hairline scratches from prior wear which can be polished off upon request. The caseback remains in good overall condition with only minor signs of wear and the serial engraving is still clear. There is some minor oxidation on the dial from age but is otherwise in good condition. The watch is in full working order.
