Description

This is the Vacheron Constantin 222. Introduced in 1977 to celebrate the 222nd anniversary of the house of Vacheron Constantin, the 222 was the original inspiration for what became their best selling sports line, the Overseas. As far as sports watches go, this reference was previously one of the best kept secrets in the world of horology. Designed by Jorg Hysek and reminiscent of Patek’s Nautilus and AP’s Royal Oak, the 222 was very limited in production over the eight-year production span. The resemblance also goes further than physical appearances, with the 222 also being powered by the base Caliber 920 of JLC. Given the meteoric rise in demand of Vacheron Constantin, it’s no wonder that the demand of the 222s have risen exponentially given the extremely limited supply. The industrial outlook of the 222 is distinct, with the integrated bracelet fitting seamlessly into the case decorated with a notched bezel. With the recent auction results of the 222s hammered at almost five times of their estimates, it’s safe to say that this reference is no longer horology’s best kept secret. To the ones who have been paying attention, this comes as no surprise given that it is such an important reference among one of horology’s holy trinity.

Condition

This Vacheron 222 reference 46003 is in good vintage condition. The case appears to be unpolished and is thick and sharp with strong chamfers. There are some signs of wear on the case, particularly near the bottom right lug with some hairlines. The bezel is overall in good condition with some hairlines from prior wear. The dial is clean with no flaws and the crystal has some hairlines near the date window and the 4 o’clock. The serial on the caseback is still clear. The bracelet is in excellent condition with virtually no stretch and 15 links, which fits up to a wrist size of 6.25”.
