Piaget Protocole Onyx 9154
Description
This is the Piaget Protocole reference 9154. Founded in 1874 by Georges Edourd Piaget, the brand has been a manufacturer of movements and movement components for more than a century. With a focus on ultra-thin movements, Piaget produced and sold its own wristwatches from as early as the beginning of the 20th century as well as supplying movements and movement parts to other renowned watch brands.
In 1956, Piaget introduced two ultra-thin calibres that the brand would become renowned for - the cal. 9P manual winding at just 2.00mm in height and what was then the world’s thinnest automatic movement with the 2.3mm tall cal. 12P. These two movements would lay the foundations of the Piaget brand as a specialist in ultra-thin dress watches.
Running on the aforementioned cal. 9P, the Piaget Protocole spawns from a Piaget ultra-thin watch introduced in the early 1960s that ran on the same movement and the line was later expanded with the brand introducing other variants of the model such as the Protocole XL and Miss Protocole. What makes this particular Protocole even more special is the uncommon onyx dial that has withstood the test of time. Known for being fragile, stone dials with no imperfections have become harder and harder to come by.
Highly distinct with its pin-striped case, recessed crown and hidden lugs on the caseback, the Protocole is among the few models from Piaget that has a design language still relevant today. A once-overlooked reference, more Protocoles with uncommon dial variants have started to come to market with the growing interest in moderately-sized dress watches.
Condition
This Piaget Protocole 9154 is in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of wear on the caseback in the form of hairline scratches. There are no dings or dents on the case and the crystal remains clean. The dial is flawless with no hairlines and the hands remain in excellent condition with minimal signs of oxidation. The watch retains its original Piaget buckle with no box or papers and is in full working order.
