Omega "Silver Snoopy Award" Speedmaster
Description
This is the Omega Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary Speedmaster. Likely the model that’s most associated with the Omega brand, this iconic chronograph was introduced in 1957 as a sports and racing chronograph. Originally powered by the famous Calibre 321, the Omega Speedmaster was worn by astronauts on space missions as they needed a watch that could withstand the conditions of outer space and in 1964, only Omega’s Speedmaster passed the rigorous selection criteria.
In 1970, the crew of the Apollo 13 were faced with an explosion on board and the crew had to abandon their spacecraft into the Lunar Module. It was during this period that the Speedmaster proved pivotal as the pilot, Jack Swigert, needed to time the engine burn at 14 seconds to re-enter the Earth’s orbit safely. For it’s contribution, Omega was awarded the Snoopy Award, which was later used to produce three different Snoopy Speedmasters.
This reference, the “Silver Snoopy Award”, is the most recent of the Snoopy trilogy. The dial is silver (AG925) with a blue ceramic bezel, blue subdials and blue indices. The caseback, however, is the star of the show with a display of the moon, the stars and a revolving Earth. Once the chronograph function is engaged, Snoopy flies from the Earth towards the moon with the caseback as its canvas in a masterful display of watchmaking. The Snoopy is powered by the then-new Cal. 3861, which was also used for their latest Moonwatch and an upgrade from their previous Cal. 1861.
As mentioned, the Snoopy has been released in three different variants, with the earliest currently being the most collectible as seen from prices in the secondary market. Though this wasn’t released as a limited edition per se, there appears to be a long waitlist given the complexity of manufacturing just the caseback itself and there is an expectation that this reference will be discontinued at some point in the near future. As with the other Snoopys, this is a piece that is simultaneously serious and mischievous and is likely to become collectible sooner rather than later.
Condition
This Omega Silver Snoopy Award Speedmaster is in excellent pre-owned condition with only minor signs of wear. There are some light hairlines on the case without any dings or dents. The watch comes as a complete set with the original box, card, manual and accessories and is in full working order.
