Description

This is the D.Dornblüth & Sohn cal. 99.2. Hailing from the lesser known town of Kalbe, Germany, D.Dornblüth & Sohn was founded in 1999 by Dieter and Dirk Dornblüth. A relatively young independent with a small annual production, Dornblüth draws inspiration from pocket watches of the past with its own quintessentially German interpretation. With almost all of the components made out of the Dornblüth manufacture run by the father-and-son team in Kalbe, the brand has carved an identity for itself with its German aesthetic, workmanship and reliablity.

The first calibre presented by Dirk Dornblüth that coincides with the birth of the brand, the cal. 99.2 was based on a completely reworked manual wind UNITAS 6497. Featuring the signature Dornblüth three-quarter plate with Geneva striped finishing, a swan-neck regulator and a hand-engraved balance cock, the movement truly belies the size of the manufacture. Housed in a stainless steel case, the dial is made of sterling silver with a matte black finish and features two symmetrical subdials with the small seconds indictor at the nine and the power reserve at the three. The monochromatic aesthetic is enhanced by the applied silver numerals paired with the superluminova white hands. This particular reference 99.2 also appears to be a special edition produced to celebrate a retailer's fifth anniversary with the engraving 5. Jahrastag on the caseback.

Given that almost all the components are made in-house and the impeccable movement finishing, the brand offers tremendous value for money. It is notable that the brand has not succumbed to the seemingly exponential price increases in comparison to its peers and remains in demand due to the small production numbers and D.Dornblüth & Sohn remains one of the true value propositions in the increasingly crowded space of independent watchmaking.

Condition

This D.Dornblüth & Sohn 99.2 is in very good pre-owned condition with only light signs of wear on the case. Both crystals have no flaws and the dial has no signs of age. There is a small mark on the seconds hand and a scratch on the case near the eight with no dings or dents. The watch comes without its original papers but retains the original inner and outer box as well as the D.Dornblüth & Sohn 99.2 steel buckle. It is in full working order.
