Daniel Roth Retrograde C127
Description
This is the Daniel Roth C127 Retrograde. Daniel Roth is a early independent within the watchmaking industry that once received little attention in the modern horology. A fourth generation watchmaker, Daniel Roth started his career at Audemars Piguet where he was already recognized for his technical watchmaking abilities. Following his AP stint, Roth moved to Breguet where even until today, his design and legacy still has its influences.
The legacy of Daniel Roth during the late 90s to early 2000s period can be largely divided into three periods. The first period, where he established his own brand post Breguet in 1989, to when Hour Glass bought a stake in 1995 and finally, to when his brand was bought by Bulgari in 2001. Today, Daniel Roth produces watches under his own brand, JDN, with only a handful of commissioned pieces a year.
This reference C127 Retrograde is a rare offering from the first period of Daniel Roth and is one of the earlier timepieces that was produced by the man himself. Inspired by George Daniels’ One Minute Tourbillon Pocket Watch, the C127 displays the master’s aesthetic eye and creativity at its finest. The pin-striped guilloche dial with blue steeled hands and Arabic numerals is housed in his signature double-ellipse case. Two intersecting circles display the minute and seconds hand with a fan-shaped hour display in between. The technical prowess of Daniel Roth is also evident with the use of the Lemania 27LN movement that is exquisitely finished by hand.
While some of his later work does carry similar design traits, most seasoned collectors long for the pre-Hour Glass era Roths that have become increasingly hard to find and when they come to market, tend to rightfully be snapped up immediately. Given Daniel Roth’s historical importance as a pioneer of independent watchmaking, it is of little wonder that his early pieces have now become the most sought after and he will always remain one of the most respected and avant-garde watchmakers of his generation.
Condition
This Daniel Roth C127 Retrograde is in good pre-owned condition and appears to be in unpolished condition. There are hairline scratches throughout the yellow gold case and on the caseback which can be polished off upon request. There are no dings or dents on the case. The caseback engravings are crisp and clear. The crystal has no flaws and the dial is clean. It retains its original strap and yellow gold buckle and is in full working order.
