Cartier Santos Dumont XL Limited Edition W2SA0025
Description
This is the Cartier Santos Dumont XL W2SA0025. The origins of the model began in 1904, when Louis Cartier’s good friend, Alberto Santos-Dumont, wanted a wristwatch to accompany him while he was flying due to the impracticalities of the pocket watch. In 1906, Alberto Santos-Dumont was the first ever person filmed in a flight sporting the iconic Cartier watch that was designed by Louis Cartier and the rest, as they say, is history. Among the many Cartier timepieces, the Santos is arguably their most recognizable model alongside the Tank.
The first iteration of the hand-wound Santos-Dumont XL was introduced in 2020, ushering in a new era of a distinct yet recognizable modern Santos-Dumonts. Following the commercial success of the Santos-Dumont XL (and the brand in general), Cartier introduced a pair of limited editions the year after, including the aforementioned W2SA0025 with a two-tone case and a salmon dial.
Powered by the ultra-thin Cartier hand-wound 430MC movement based on Piaget’s 430P, the XL remains elegantly proportioned in spite of its larger size. Despite being termed as “XL”, it still remains moderately-sized by modern standards. Inspired by an aircraft in homage to Santos-Dumont, the W2SA0025 retains many features distinct to the Santos-Dumont with the case shape, exposed screws and blue cabochon. The dial contains a central stamped guilloche pattern flanked by Arabic numerals and a red minute track. Finally, on the caseback is an engraving of Alberto Santos-Dumont’s aircraft No. 19 - the inspiration of the reference.
When one speaks of Cartier, the allure draws from the unique and distinctive case shapes. As a jewellery powerhouse, it’s clear that their eye for design has carried over into their timepieces. Rather than focusing on competing on watchmaking, Cartier has set itself apart by mastering aesthetics and it’s always refreshing to see the brand’s interpretation of its classic and timeless designs with a modern twist to remain relevant in the modern era.
