A Lange & Sohne Saxonia 105.021
Description
This is the A Lange & Sohne Saxonia reference 105.021. Founded by Adolf Lange in the German watchmaking town of Glashutte, Lange has a storied history. Post World War II, the company was actually nationalized, leading to their company’s disappearance from the late 1940s till 1989. Post the communists’ abandonment of a single party rule in Eastern Europe, Walter Lange managed to return to his origins in Germany and re-established the company. Lange is often thought of as a watchmaking powerhouse, with workmanship, finishing and quality rivalling the best of the Swiss counterparts like Patek Philippe.
The Saxonia line was originally introduced by A Lange & Sohne in 1994 as the foundation of their dress watches. These early Saxonias were smaller in size in comparison to their modern counterparts at 34mm but carried a strong essence of the Lange DNA with the date window at the 12 and a pusher at the 2. The Calibre used in 1997 was the L941.3 with the signature 3/4 plate and is still utilised by current production Saxonias.
The reference 105.021 was the first reference with the new calibre and an open caseback to display the movement. The production period of the early Saxonias was 10 years until bigger case sizes were introduced in 2007. The early Saxonia is particularly important as it celebrates the brand’s masterful design language with a display of aesthetical symmetry.
