Description

This is the A Lange & Sohne 1815 Up/Down reference 221.021. Founded by Adolf Lange in the German watchmaking town of Glashutte, Lange has a storied history. Post World War II, the company was actually nationalized, leading to their company’s disappearance from the late 1940s till 1989. Post the communists’ abandonment of a single party rule in Eastern Europe, Walter Lange managed to return to his origins in Germany and re-established the company. Lange is often thought of as a watchmaking powerhouse, with workmanship, finishing and quality rivalling the best of the Swiss counterparts like Patek Philippe. This particular reference, the 221.021, was part of the first generation of the 1815 Up / Down collection. This reference is powered by the Caliber L942.1 with a power reserve of 45 hours and hacking seconds and this can be viewed in the open sapphire caseback. As with the early Up/Downs, the case size is 35.9mm.

Condition

This A Lange & Sohne 221.021 is in excellent pre-owned condition. The yellow gold case shows little to no sign of prior wear with some light hairlines on the caseback from prior wear. The front and back crystal is nick-free and the dial is clean with no signs of age. All hallmarks are still clear and it comes in a full set with the original box, certificate and manual dated 2013. The watch is in full working order.
